<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>54mm Irregular Miniatures</i></div>
<br />
Moving forward slowly with my 54mm Tekumel dungeon party, I put a second order into Irregular Miniatures. Seen above, this is an eclectic assortment of periods chosen for their suitability of conversion to Tekumel-appropriate adventurers.<br />
<br />
Starting with the top photo, in the center of the pic is my Noble character figure, the leader of the expedition. Actually a Samurai leader, I'm going to add some plumes to his helmet to give him that "Tekumel Vibe". To his left is my main magic support (a Chinese noble or general, IIRC) in the form of a lay wizard, temple as yet unknown. In the right of the picture are my missile support: a generic archer in back and two Ashigaru in front, one with bow and one with musket, which is going to be converted into a crossbow. To the right of the noble is his right-hand man, and bodyguard in the form of a Carolingian Guardsman. Currently he is the most heavily armoured of my figures. Nest to him is a generic slinger - more missile support (and general labour.) The last figure on the left is another gladiator; the bulk of the fighters in the party will only be medium or lightly armoured.<br />
<br />
The lower photo shows more supporting cast: back left is a native bearer who will continue that role with a little different hairstyle when I've finished. I'll probably want a few more to act as bearers. In front of him is my second magic user, a priestess, probably of Avanthe, to provide healing support to the party. The rest of the front row consists of a Zulu man and boy, a Zulu woman with pot, and on the end two Zulu maidens about to get married. Not in my game: here they are probably going to end up as Aridani warriors as will the woman with the pot. The man is likely going to be the majordomo overseeing the servants, the boy being one of those. The rest of the back row is made up of two male and two female generic nudes, one of each pose Irregular sells. Not sure what I will end up doing with these, but my thinking is more light to medium combat support.<br />
<br />
So, including the four figures from my last post, the party consists of:<br />
<br />
A nobleman, the party leader;<br />
His well armed and armoured bodyguard;<br />
A lay priest to provide magic support, temple undetermined;<br />
A priestess of Avanthe as back-up magic and healing support;<br />
Six male warriors with light or medium armour and shields;<br />
Four missile armed warriors: two bows, a crossbowman and an slinger;<br />
Six aridani warriors, unarmoured but with shields;<br />
An majordromo to oversee the servants;<br />
Two servants for him to oversee, including the boy.<br />
<br />
That's twenty three in total.<br />
<br />
Obviously I have to build up the numbers of servants! There probably should be one bearer for each other party member, plus a few extras. And I need to consider torch and lantern bearers.<br />
<br />
With twenty three members the party dwarfs the typical D&D party, but then I think Tekumel parties do tend to be larger; they are more like RW archaeological digs that a small band of murder hobos. At least, I think they are!<br />
<br />

Also, in the last pic a Space Scorpion also from Irregular Miniatures.</div>

I am painting eyes on the back of the Hru'u priest's helmet but my first attempt got a little messed up. Actually, I forgot one as well; I think there should be a third eye up and between the first two. That would be proper Tekumel. The idea with the eyes is the same as in India where they wear masks facing behind to ward off Tigers. Tigers always try to sneak up behind you when they attack, or so the thinking goes, so if they think you're watching them they are less likely to attack. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
The 54mm figures are from the Gladiator range, with a Roman Auxiliary as well. The original figure pics from the website are attached as well.</div>

The sword, axe and spear blades are from various Reaper Bones chaos warriors with over-sized weapons that I sliced off with the Xacto and drilled out and/or glued in place with super glue. Those are all from figures I wouldn't actually use because they are too outlandish and in heavy plate armour so using them for bits works out perfectly.</div>

Where we are Tropicana recently switched from cartons to bottles for their orange juice. It wasn't long before I noticed the cap - see above pics - and realized one would make a pretty nifty dais. Or perhaps a fancy column as shown in the second pic.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>The Wizard of Zao,</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>One of my favourite novels...</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Often when I visit the local dollar stores I am looking for stuff I can turn into other stuff. Equally often, however, I never get the time to actually execute those plans. Today was one of those rare instances!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
I had spotted a Christmas decoration in the remnants of the Xmas section. It was a cone shaped wire thingie covered in gold glitter and a few coloured beads. I guess it is supposed to be a Christmas tree?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
I decided it would make a nice frame to build a tower roof around so I bought it. Afterwards I decided I should have three but now all the Xmas stuff seems to be cleared away. Moral: buy it when you see it, don't dither.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
So I had decided to make the roof of a tower. The tower of what? For what? For whom? I didn't know. I still don't know! </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
For purposes of this blog post I am going with the working title: "The Tower of the Arch-Mage". </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Who is that, you ask? I don't know that either, but my first guess is the Wizard of Zao, that being a favourite Lin Carter book of mine. Not sure if he will have green skin though...</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Actually, a thought: perhaps this is the guy with the walking palanquin from my last Ngála post (Part 1 - see previous).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
So, some dollar store crafting: a Christmas decoration, some packing material from something I bought online, some duct tape and a few staples... <br />
<br style="box-sizing: content-box; line-height: 1.4em;" />
1) First I covered the cone with duct tape.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5QjasvjjQJThMBzG8prI1mxKi2X3VtBV9bp7i_gHWFA_eezk8uSzu3d1xk9qQvcz37uWtW_iV_k1-oqg7z3QGBt2pNn79kLw3lTrg5o1cJuOqpsoPyzSvvbQ2nptEPYfPJ4_AYWYQl-c/s1600/P_20200111_104607.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5QjasvjjQJThMBzG8prI1mxKi2X3VtBV9bp7i_gHWFA_eezk8uSzu3d1xk9qQvcz37uWtW_iV_k1-oqg7z3QGBt2pNn79kLw3lTrg5o1cJuOqpsoPyzSvvbQ2nptEPYfPJ4_AYWYQl-c/s320/P_20200111_104607.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
2) I discovered some packing material that was flexible and easy to cut...and not<br />
too thick. Suitable material for tiles?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyrxLgjtmoYMG1iAXacePNmp9It3aEqq_dpSPhGaes2AB2yAW8mROUE7tiPMCZAJ_n7lCZyV8yiUq-MWIIyYPlnhJnMdSoSugLqCSguYN2vbXLY_vhlSu7h8lOXvS0aabrI5BV8T0Dojo/s1600/P_20200111_111948.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyrxLgjtmoYMG1iAXacePNmp9It3aEqq_dpSPhGaes2AB2yAW8mROUE7tiPMCZAJ_n7lCZyV8yiUq-MWIIyYPlnhJnMdSoSugLqCSguYN2vbXLY_vhlSu7h8lOXvS0aabrI5BV8T0Dojo/s320/P_20200111_111948.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
2) I tried stapling on the first few strips, but quickly switched to duct tape.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu63JwHVgufsJzN6zJMKhGrNvYqIzvOQsOF-suzBYl35TeRvVbNrjwxlF4zJkxyB7HkXInV3VAiOOSt-WE8ieyNoIShWMdH4grdmAsxSkjnaQ-eGoB-MPSN_ZKYLEiB4Q0I0RpsEd7jzs/s1600/P_20200111_114804.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu63JwHVgufsJzN6zJMKhGrNvYqIzvOQsOF-suzBYl35TeRvVbNrjwxlF4zJkxyB7HkXInV3VAiOOSt-WE8ieyNoIShWMdH4grdmAsxSkjnaQ-eGoB-MPSN_ZKYLEiB4Q0I0RpsEd7jzs/s320/P_20200111_114804.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
<br style="box-sizing: content-box; line-height: 1.4em;" />
3) Somewhat belatedly I realized that I should be cutting the strips into curves!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
4) The last step is to cut into the edges of the strips to make the individual<br />
tiles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0UAUzBU4sKPkxKGUxivAQ6YSfviYbBf6hOYoqNZ7X5lCptU3o-wSVXLX_JPBoi9wDSXKhBErhw63Pv3jRPPraTk-iwTI5pU6wsFdYoZFpUTxxyJ3tAFpgvBayeQlmMEy9IXpPaTbW0oM/s1600/P_20200111_122728.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0UAUzBU4sKPkxKGUxivAQ6YSfviYbBf6hOYoqNZ7X5lCptU3o-wSVXLX_JPBoi9wDSXKhBErhw63Pv3jRPPraTk-iwTI5pU6wsFdYoZFpUTxxyJ3tAFpgvBayeQlmMEy9IXpPaTbW0oM/s320/P_20200111_122728.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
<br style="box-sizing: content-box; line-height: 1.4em;" />
Compared to a 28mm figure they are quite large! Which is why they have lasted so many millenia!<br />
<br style="box-sizing: content-box; line-height: 1.4em;" />
5) Finishing? A coat of Gesso, maybe?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Cost so far:</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Christmas decoration: $1.50</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Packing material: free (somebody sent it to me).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Duct Tape: $4 for the roll. I used about 3' maybe. Maybe 5% of the roll.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Staples: about a dozen (from "stock").</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
Time? a little over 2 hours, including time to take pictures and compose email.</div>
<h3 style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
A Note About Ngála</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; color: #555555; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">
When I went to put Part 1 of this series up on other forums, such as the Lead Adventure Forum, or The Miniature Page, I realized that nobody would have any idea what I was rambling on about. Or, at least, many people wouldn't. So I wrote a bit of a blurb as a sort of intro. But then I realized that I should have included that in my original post. I never got around to editing that, so here is the blurb, belatedly, for your enlightenment and enjoyment. ;-)</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: content-box; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 14px;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-230set.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="391" data-original-width="750" height="166" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-230set.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Chaos Command Group</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Note that these figures are each available separately which is useful if one wants extra drummers, for example. These are part of Ral Partha Europe's <i>Chaos Imperium</i> range. Unlike the <i>Divided Kingdoms </i>range these were Ral Partha's own range and not part of the <i>Crucible Miniatures</i> line.<br />
<br />
I'll admit I haven't figured out entirely how I'll incorporate this range, but there are lots of figure variations so it could potentially span many nations and legions, and temples as many I think are useable as Temple Guards or Warrior Priests (and some are sold as such!)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-236b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="337" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-236b.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Shock Trooper Pike (b)</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There are three Shock Troopers, this one being my favourite. I use this figure as Pijeni from the <i>The Inimitable Forces of Ancient Kai</i>, which I have previously blogged about. I think I would also use him as Temple Guard because the pose is "just right", as Goldilocks would say.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-236a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="599" height="240" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-236a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Shock Trooper Pike (a)</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This Shock Trooper pose I also quite like. I am using it for a Mu'ugalavyani legion. At least I've started painting a "test" figure red. I haven't quite found a legion for it to proxy, and I might raise an entirely new legion to bolster the Mu'ug forces. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The third Shock Trooper I like the least:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-236c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="599" height="240" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-236c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Shock Trooper Pike (c)</i></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
I guess I could see him posed behind a wall of shields like the Persians used to do, perhaps partnered with a crossbowman? Actually, now that is an idea - I'm making this up as I type - I mean, that style of fighting is quite common on Tekumel. Professor Barker was always combining fighting pairs of warriors, particularly for Yan Kor, but not I think exclusively. I like the spear tip as Mu'ugalavyani but could do for other nations as well. I actually just bought some nifty Sassanid pavise shields from Aventine Miniatures:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://aventineminiatures.co.uk/catalog/images/20151020_123323.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" height="180" src="https://aventineminiatures.co.uk/catalog/images/20151020_123323.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Sassanid Large Shield/Pavise (Aventine Miniatures)</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I had originally thought to use them with either crossbows or in a siege context, or both, really. But this actually works quite well. I can paint them black with a red pattern and they could be part of a combined fighting formation Medium Pikes, paired with crossbows. Now there would typically be a heavy legion also in the mix so maybe that will be the Shock Pikeman (a) figure, or maybe I find something else...)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-231c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="337" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-231c.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Chaos Archer (c), with Crossbow </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've jumped to the Chaos Archers because I just know the crossbowman is the figure to match with the third Shock Trooper pikeman. The other Chaos Archers are shown below:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-231a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="337" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-231a.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Chaos Archer (a)</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-231b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="337" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-231b.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Chaos Archer (b)</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I haven't figured out which legion or nation these might belong to yet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up in the Chaos Imperium list are the Chaos Guardsmen. There are four(4) different figures. The same bodies but four different weapon arms. And they can be bought as a set or individually.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/bmz_cache/8/84bcfd43f8de99eb0f4e0d25d846657f.image.750x387.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="387" data-original-width="750" height="165" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/bmz_cache/8/84bcfd43f8de99eb0f4e0d25d846657f.image.750x387.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Chaos Guardsmen</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The weapon choices are two different swords, an axe, and a long-hafted mace. The shields are the weak point for these figures, at least for me. For one, I believe they are moulded on (ugh), and secondly, there are those spikes on the shield. Now Professor Barker does describe some legions as having spiked shields - did he use these figures? 😉 - but personally I would have preferred plain shields - and detached shields, even better!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Chaos Guardsman (d), with curved sword</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Whether a particular unit has a curved sword or scimitar is often mentioned in the legion descriptions so that might help to guide the choice, however, the skull masked helmet is even more prominent a descriptor. Are these Sarku troops? The skull motif isn't exclusively Sarku or Durritlamish though it does feature prominently in their costume.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-232b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="337" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-232b.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Chaos Guardsman (c), with mace</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another thing to consider is that one could cut away the existing weapons, drill out the hand and add a wire pike or spear. The arms are separate so there might be some room to pose them at different angles but, looking closely at the pics, perhaps the axe pose is best as it seems the arm is posed to hold the weapon upright. I haven't splurged on these guys yet and so cannot offer guidance at this time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-233set.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="421" data-original-width="571" height="235" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-233set.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Chaos Foot Knights</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sold as a pack of six but also available individually. I haven't considered these figures much before. Perhaps they could be officers if there isn't a legion choice available, or Temple Guards or Warrior Priests. Temple Guard units are mentioned as taking the field, most notably at the Battle of Ry, but I think units of Warrior Priests could also be formed. I think they would be small contingents but I think they could see a place, especially during the Tsolyani Civil War.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-234set.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="427" data-original-width="722" height="189" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-234set.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Amazons</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unless one uses these as character figures, the one with the whip could be a slaver, for example, then one has to invent aridani legions for them to serve. Not that that is a bad idea, of course. Alternatively they could be Temple Guards. As far as nations go, I have been considering Pijena and/or Salarvya. The former is too small - <i>canonically</i> - to field many units, but then in my books, <i>canon</i> is a four letter word. And the latter doesn't have as many aridani warriors as Tsolyanu, for example; it does have some all female units however, so perhaps there is room for more. Again, sold as a pack of six or as singles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Berserker (b), with greatsword</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Except for figure (b) with the greatsword, I don't really like these figures. Figure (c) is slightly larger than the others. As always, Your Mileage May Vary. (Aside: what expression is used in Europe?) Maybe I haven't devoted enough time to considering the uses for these figures. Berserker (b) with the flame-shaped blade could perhaps be Vimuhla-related, perhaps?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>War Monks</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A four (4) figure set this time, available separately per usual. I haven't really considered the first figure, the Bishop of Chaos. A priest of some sort perhaps, possibly with the headdress being altered. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bishop of Chaos, War Monk (a)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To be fair, you could cut away the crook, replacing it with a spear or maybe a halberd, and perhaps add a shield. Alternately perhaps that crook is actually some sort of exotic halberd-like polearm? Hmm, maybe I have been dismissing this figure out of hand. In any case, I think maybe as a Temple Guard unit is the route I'll take.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>War Monk (b)</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-245c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="418" data-original-width="334" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-245c.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>War Monk (c)</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-245d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="337" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-245d.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>War Monk (d)</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other War monks could be Warrior Priests, or some sort of Temple Guard unit, or from multiple legions and/or nations. I haven't worked that out yet. The shields are a bit too spikey for my tastes, with the exception of figure (c).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This pretty much covers the Chaos Imperium range available from Ral Partha Europe. The rest of the range are not really either for Tekumel or for formed units. There are the Winged War Demons, which might do as Vorodla, perhaps:</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The latter are available singly as well as a set of two. I think maybe they are the strongest candidates as well. I don't have any of these War Demon figures and so can't really comment otherwise. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They have other figures that are useful for Tekumel gamers, but they are in other ranges, and I will do a separate post for that. One last figure I should mention from the Chaos Imperium range is the Scorpian Man, possibly of interest to Glorantha gamers...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-324a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="600" height="240" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-324a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Irregular Archer #1</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-324b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="338" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-324b.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Irregular Archer #2</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Continuing my look at the Divided Kingdoms range, formerly Crucible, offered by Ral Partha Europe. IMO these figures make great proxies for Tekumel gaming. I manufacture Tekumel miniatures, but with Tsolyanu <i>alone</i> having around 90 legions that task of making all the required (desired?) miniatures myself is plainly impossible. Hence: proxies to the rescue! :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the first part of this Ral Partha Europe piece I skipped over the archers. This is because I haven't spent that much time trying to sort out which legions or nation's forces they might proxy. The closest I've come is for these "Irregular Archers" who are wearing a sort of Brigantine armour. My current thinking is that this could be painted in red and black checks, possibly, to represent the <i>Red Horde of Kilalammu</i>.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Regular Archer #2</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These could be part of the same legion, or two different ones, as there are differences in the armour and really it depends upon how uniform you think each particular nation would be. Professor Barker once told me that the Yan koryani were less uniform than the Tsolyani, and suggested that within a gurek each trooper could be wearing differently styled armour. Some might be newer styles, but others might be wearing family heirlooms, that sort of thing. When I commissioned the Yan Koryani figures the way I handled that was by getting three helmet variants made. There were already 2 male and one female pose for each troop type so adding the helmet variations gave nine variants. And there are at least nine troop types, including heavy scale armour and medium armour (in chlen hide cuirass) as well as weapons: overhand cutting, underhand thrust, 2-handed pike or halberd, etc. This means that there are around 80+ Yan Koryani figures. Normally I just add the variation via the helmet variants but latley I have been thinking of mixing scale armour and cuirass in the same units. All of these figures are those wearing the khil, that distinctive Yan Korynai helmet style. Not all Yan Koryani use it, however, and one could argue in favour of mixing other helmet styles in the same gureks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But I digress. These Regular Archers could be Yan Koryani, or perhaps Mu'ugalvaynai or Salarvyani. I am leaning toward the latter two nations. But which one...?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<i>Mercenary Berserker Swordsman</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Mercenary Berserker Axeman</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These have a really wild, ragged look to them. I like all the sculpted faces on the various bits of armour. This is a feature throughout the range that is an added "plus" for me. These figures are obviously less "disciplined legion" and more "wild tribesman". My thinking is Haida Pakalla, maybe, or maybe Ghatoni. The braided hair of the swordsman does say "N'luss" in a way, but think the figure is not large enough to be a proper N'luss. But the hairstyle could be a regional thing and Ghaton is just adjacent to N'lussa. I might end up using them as Ghatoni tribal levy, hillfolk following the army in search of loot. And I might still add the odd figure, differently painted, into my Haida Pakallan pirate crews. My idea for them is for a very mixed lot of savages.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are a couple of other Divided Kingdom figures I want ot comment on, but maybe I will do an edit this evening. Tomorrow, I'll comment about the <i>Chaos Imperium </i>range...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Pikeman #2</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Former Crucible range:<br />
<br />
Pikemen #1 & #2 – these figures both have heavy armour, but of different styles. They could be combined into a single unit but I have decided to use them as two different, but related Yan Koryani gureks: the Purified City of Krel (#27 IIRC) and its sister unit, whose name I forget (#7). Both are pike units “that fight in phalanx formation”. I am not sure why this has to be stated. Maybe it is just filler text, or maybe some pike units on Tekumel do not fight as a phalanx. Maybe there is a distinction being drawn between pikes used in ECW or 30YW fashion and Macedonian-style pikemen? Anyway, IIRC one unit is stated to be in full plate armour, the other in heavy armour. Both gureks have other troop types of course but I haven't figured those all out yet. Except one has heavy armoured crossbows, for which I think I am going to use the Reaper Crusader Crossbow figures, from the Warlord range.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-325a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="338" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-325a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-325b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="338" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-325b.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Swordsman #2</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Swordsman #1 & #2 – I like these figures a lot, with their demon-faced shields. I am not completely decided who they fight for, however.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-328a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="338" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-328a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Halberdier #1</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-328b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="338" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-328b.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Halberdier #2</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Halberdier #1 & #2 – Again, I haven't decided which Empire these are part of yet. (I'm leaning towards Salarvya currently...)</div>
</div>
<br />
I should note that I am probably going to end up inventing new legions. I don't have a problem with that. It seems to me that a lot of the existing legions were created to accomodate Barker's players. And some nations seem a bit sparce on the ground; Salarvya, in particular, has few troops compared to the expanse of land it occupies. I suppose a lot of the land could just be wilderness, ownership being more theoretical than actual. Or there could be a ton of Feudal Household troops.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-329a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="338" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-329a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Testudo Spearman #1</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-329b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="600" height="240" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-329b.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Testudo Spearman #2</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Testudo Spearman #1 & #2 – I really like the shield these guys have, with the female face on it! The one pose with his arms in the air is no good as they depict it, holding the shield aloft as well. No worry, this is like getting a free shield as I will use it elsewhere. I think these are Salarvyani troops because the face has to be that of the Goddess Shirringayi! I think they fight with the shieldbearers in the front rank who make a Persian style wall of shields, and the other ranks press in behind, hence the overarm pose. This means the shield from the second figure can be used somewhere else. Not sure where yet. A Salarvyani pavise shield perhaps?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-330a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="338" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-330a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Thane Bodyguard #1</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-330b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="338" height="320" src="https://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/images/02-330b.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Thane Bodyguard #2</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: center;">Thane Bodyguard </span> #1 & #2 – They have demon-bladed axes and wear the hide of a great ape over their helmet and armour. I think the apes are the Great White Apes as found on Barsoom. I think they live in the mountains, so these figures perhaps represent Saa Allaqani or Pechani warriors. Not sure which yet. I don't think there is a unit description that matches fully, though 2-handed axes are a Saa Allaqani thing, it seems.<br />

The Káchor tribes are described in a single line entry in M.A.R. Barker's novel "The Man of Gold", where their brightly feathered costumes are mentioned. Beyond that we know they live in the Chákan forests and that, as they are apparently clients or tenants of the Temple of Thúmis, they are possibly opposed to their neighbours, the Íto clan.<br />
<br />
Because of their description I use Maya and Aztec figures as proxies, which I source from <a href="http://www.gringo40s.com/" target="_blank">Gringo 40s</a>, <a href="https://www.lucideyepublications.com/" target="_blank">Lucid Eye</a> (Jaguar Tribe and Maxzan ranges), <a href="https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/" target="_blank">Wargames Foundry</a> and <a href="http://www.outpostwargameservices.co.uk/" target="_blank">Outpost Wargames Services</a>. There may be others out there that I am forgetting. Like: Paymaster Games, for example!<br />
<br />
The Maori Pa is designed by <a href="https://www.printablescenery.com/product/maori-pa-stockade/" target="_blank">Printable Scenery</a>, but as I don't own a 3D printer I used the "Get It Printed" button which took me to <a href="http://grymforge.com/" target="_blank">Grym Forge</a> here in Canada. I ordered the full palisade set which is what you see arrayed on my table. I forgot about that nifty gate! I'll have to ask about ordering that...<br />
<br />
I don't know how I stumbled on it, but as soon as I saw Printable Scenery's Maori Pa I realized it would be perfect for my Káchor tribes. I've changed the name to <i>Páh</i>, which in My Tékumel will be the Káchor word for <i>home</i> or something like that. Note that <i>Pa! </i>actually means "Look!" in Tsolyáni.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I think these make great proxies for Tekumel gaming. Not sure which nation I will put them with yet. Probably I will choose a legion that has multiple sizes of war machines - i.e. light and heavy ballista - because the Demon headed war machine is a bit smaller than the other. I think I'm leaning towards Salarvya however, as the Salarvyani are known to have gargoyles on their buildings and these designs invoke that sort of thing.</div>

I'm a big fan of rules that can be distilled onto a single sheet. I don't think that will be possible with <i>A Band of Joyous Heroes </i>simply because of all the spell and creature descriptions that take up too much space, however, I can still make the attempt!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yesterday I sent my latest draft of the first card: <i>Actions</i> on the front and <i>Combat</i> on the back. See above for what they look like. The are derived from the Dark Passage naval game I ran a year or so back. I'll be providing a detailed explanation later. Right now I'm trying to get ready for Cold Wars.</div>

<i>Almost everything purchased from Dollarama...</i></div>
<br />
A few weeks ago I discovered a local Dollarama I didn't know existed so I stopped by and browsed for a while. I left with a few bags of "Stuff"! :-)<br />
<br />
Note that Dollarama is a species of so-called "dollar store" but one that items could be a buck, or $2 or $3 or more, depending on the item. All pretty cheap, though. In the above pictures, the bonsai tree (on left), the other plants (lavender?), the round bases, the cork, the white glue and the gravel all came from the store. The lavender plants came in the wooden holder which I think makes a good pedestal for a statue, or some other architectural feature.<br />
<br />
The bonsai tree was one of two or three varieties and cost $4 CAD, including a rectangular display pot (not pictured). The lavender plants were $2 @ including the wooden flower pot. The gravel came in a jam jar sized container. I think it was $3-4 but don't remember exactly. The cork was two 12" square sheets for $2-3 and the round bases were all in one bag for about $2.<br />
<br />
As soon as I saw the lavender plants I thought they would make some nice exotic looking trees for my Tekumel games. Afterwards I noticed that there are two types of leaves around the base.<br />
<br />
The legion of Serqu trooper in the picture shows how they go with 28mm figures.<br />
<br />
All in all, I think it was a pretty good find. Still some more work to do, but not much.<br />
<br />
I might go back for more bonsai trees, and perhaps more lavender. How big a forest does one need?<br />
<br />
Other things I picked up at the same time include some 12" square plastic grass mats (intended I think for backyard pools) and some plastic dinosaurs I intend to go all "Dr Moreau" on! :-)<br />
<br />

This mighty was originally a 28mm Dhow made for a friend of mine by his Father-in-law. He gifted it to me after I did my Dark Passage naval game - Thank you again, Mike! :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For a home made model I don't think its that bad. The sides are not perfectly symmetrical but it has a sort of fantastical look to it. Its definitely got a <i>"Dawn Treader"</i> vibe to it! Which is what I want, as my ambition is to use it as a basis for some sort of large warship for Tekumel naval games. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you look at the cover of the Empire of the Petal Throne box you can see ships and boats drawn by Professor Barker; they have more fantastical forms than boring old Greek or Roman galleys! That is what I want to achieve. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What I want to do is somehow mould this in resin and then make variants of it. The question is, how to best go about moulding something so large? It is 18-19" long, 4" wide and 5" tall at its highest point. and it has railings, which are surely going to cause problems. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I guess I'm off to YouTube to look for advice. If you have any advice or information please feel free to offer it! Thanks in Advance! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>The Mss</i><span style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;"><i>ú</i></span><i>ma Delta</i></div>
<br />
Latest work: I've taken my earlier attempt at sketching the delta and added my latest efforts at Nisu<span style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">é</span>l. If you enlarge the image you might be able to get the hint that the splash of colour at Nisu<span style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">é</span>l is in fact the cover image that I am tracing.<br />
<br />
My older rivers are much wider than that in the cover painting. At least, as I currently have that scaled. Nisu<span style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">é</span>l is about 600 meters from north to south along the river, measuring between the wall bastions. So the Nisu<span style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">é</span>l map symbol shown above is about a kilometer across.<br />
<br />
My initial canals now have to be re-thought out and re-drawn. And I need to decide how many other larger clan holdings are in the delta - and which clans they are!<br />
<br />
The Red Marshes I've blogged about before >>> <a href="https://heroesoftheage.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Red%20Marshes" target="_blank">Here</a>. I have to decide how large to make them...and how many forested areas to add as hunting reserves.<br />
<br />
I also need to re-read the "Anatomy of a Peasant Economy" (<a href="https://heroesoftheage.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-anatomy-of-peasant-economy.html" target="_blank">LINK</a>) to give me a better idea if I've scaled my Nisu<span style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">é</span>l correctly. I can compare the real world example with the density shown in the artist's impression.<br />
<br />
Edit: I just found a YouTube video from 2015 of "Pila Laguna - Tansa and Tubuan".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Plodding ahead with detailing the Mssúma river delta, starting with Nisuél, seat of the Clan of the Golden Sunburst, I have started to identify some of the location names. Don't forget to use the tags to find the rest of this series, and the overall "Exploring Tsolyánu" series.</div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
Ever since I happened across this artist's impression of the city of Thonburi (Thailand) by <i style="background-color: transparent; text-align: center;">Suthichai Ritthapatichai </i><span style="background-color: transparent; text-align: center;">I have become more and more convinced that this is what the </span>Mssúma delta looks like. Thonburi is even described as being a "canal and garden (or park) district". Which matches pretty much with Professor Barker's description of the delta being "...the Produce-Garden that feeds Jakálla..." and how it is "criss-crossed with canals and secondary roads." </div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
Nisuél amounts to a good-sized village. It is located on the Dhu’ónin River (Golden River), one of the many distributary rivers that thread to-and-fro across the Mssúma river delta. Between them are networks of major and minor canals, creating a patchwork of fields and ponds, with woodlots scattered here and there, and secondary roads weaving throughout it all as best they can. The population of the delta is pretty dense, mostly employed in agricultural practices. It is a pretty safe district, with Tékumel's more dangerous denizens kept far away by vigilant warders and a millennia old policy of extermination for any that stray too near.</div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
I've done a bit of research on the Clan of the Golden Sunburst. I've looked up personages in the various sources, principal of which is always the "Hardison Guide", as I call it. One thing that bothered me was that Alva lists the Clan Patriarch as being named "Nisuél"; bothered me until today, that is, when it finally dawned on me that they were just following the long standing practice used by the legions of the Kérdu taking the name of the traditional Kérdu. i.e. "Sérqu" is passed down through the ages, from one general to the next. Indeed, the Hardison Guide mentions that the "17th Sérqu" was a member of the clan. So I am reconciled with the idea that the Clan Patriarch is called "Nisuél" even as it is used for the community itself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
If you click on the above image you'll see I've used this in my attempt at naming the features on the painting. </div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
<b><i>Nisuél's Manse </i></b>- which is the principal residence of the sitting Clan Patriarch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">
Also shown is the <b><i>Bastion of Sérqu, "Swath of Red"</i></b>, a reference to that 17th Sérqu mentioned in the Hardison Guide. A similar defensive work is at the southern end: the <b><i>Tower of Kokún Vriyón</i></b>, named after an Éngsvanyáli "Hero of the Age". </div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">

Other features I've tentatively - this is still only a first draft - identified are:</div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">

The <b><i>Channel-Master's Station</i></b> and the <b><i>Canal-Master's Lodge</i></b>, two of the clan officials charged with the smooth running of the Clan's business. I suspect the Channel Master out-ranks the Canal Master. </div>
<div class="separator" style="background-color: #fefdfa; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

I don't think "Guild of Iron" has been used before, and while there are no guilds as such, the term guild has been used: the Temple of Qon's "Guild of those Who Repel the Dark" (Source: Mitla</span></span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 13px;">ny</span></span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">á</span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 13px;">l, Vol. 1).</span></span></div>

Note that I think clan apartments would be scattered among these complexes for senior members of the clan to reside in. </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 13px;">So that is my start. As I said, a first draft. Coming up with extravagant sounding names ain't easy you know! ;-)</span></span></div>

I found this while excavating the basement a week or so ago; so I've had it a while, I just never had a definitive use for it. <div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://heroesoftheage.blogspot.com/2014/11/metlan-and-jayo-in-more-detail.html" target="_blank">Key</a></div>
<br />
I've decided to build my little towns of Métlan and Jáyo. I don't mean "build" in the sense of a permanent table layout or diorama. I mean I am going to start making scenery and buildings and props to allow me to put parts of the locale on the table. For use in tabletop wargames scenarios, skirmish scenarios - RPG-lite adventure games - whatever you want to call them. For "A Band of Joyous Heroes", or for any rule set one cares to use.<br />
<br />
I've decided to start with the floating arena. In my <a href="https://heroesoftheage.blogspot.com/2014/11/metlan-and-jayo-in-more-detail.html" target="_blank">initial post</a> it is described as follows:<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span lang="EN-CA" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-indent: -24px;">20)<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal;"> </span></span><span lang="EN-CA" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-indent: -24px;">The Hirilákte Arena. Shared between the two towns of Métlan and Jáyo, it is not a proper arena at all, but rather is a circular array of stout posts driven into the riverbed and protruding a few feet above high water level. These delineate the area used for the events which are staged on a variety of barges and other boats as deemed appropriate. Spectators view the events from other boats or barges that are rowed over and anchored in place or tied up to the posts. There are also some platforms on tall stilts located at the typical low water mark on which are set up tents from which the arena referees and imperial representatives and their guests view the matches. There is a considerable rivalry between the two towns and also between the temples of the two towns. Many matches pit the two against each other, while other matches are “neutral” in nature.</span></blockquote>
<br />
I'm starting there because about a week ago I realized that I already had the components to make it! I've had them for several years, and just to date have failed to see their usefulness. Its funny how things work out! Here they are:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqSuVx5EfdmHbh_ziXZ_Uh2ufknfrbiovbvcCG-iSmByYr4-8VVBVfTTMucdGKdR264Y1-lcblCAK5FqgQRE0hoqM9sb40pj6bGTbwgjZpQMmpBIBlPjaKyhtt3TLVzQiFOSgTGHTivfI/s1600/Rafts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="978" data-original-width="1600" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqSuVx5EfdmHbh_ziXZ_Uh2ufknfrbiovbvcCG-iSmByYr4-8VVBVfTTMucdGKdR264Y1-lcblCAK5FqgQRE0hoqM9sb40pj6bGTbwgjZpQMmpBIBlPjaKyhtt3TLVzQiFOSgTGHTivfI/s320/Rafts.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
These are plastic Dollar Store toys. Part of some sort of "Wild West" bag of plastic figures, IIRC. No idea if they are still available. Likely are, somewhere. Each raft is about 3" x 5", with a single hole at one end and two holes at the other. I've arrayed them in the nine-square-grid beloved of my first year studio profs but as you can see I am two short.<br />
<br />
You know, I probably had enough originally but some are probably either on <i>walkabout</i> (i.e. "lost" within the confines of the house) or have been sold or given away. My memory on this is vague but I am pretty sure I have either thought about giving them away or selling them several times in the past so maybe the missing rafts are ones that I did, foolishly, dispose of. :-(<br />
<br />
There is a moral in there somewhere.<br />
<br />
And, actually, now that I think of it, there is a set of Natural Laws that covers this precisely: <b>The Laws of Stuff.</b><br />
<br />
These are ancient laws that predate the Internet, though you can find some re-iterated online to a greater or lesser degree. Sometimes stated incorrectly, as a quick Google-search has just revealed. One of these laws, I don't recall which one, states that the value of stuff is inversely related to its availability. That is to say, stuff you can't find is of greater use/need, and therefore value, than the stuff you have to hand.<br />
<br />
So those two missing boats (assuming I did have them in the first place) illustrate that particular Law to a tee; so does my father looking for his glasses not 20 minutes ago!<br />
<br />
So, two things:<br />
<br />
1) My original concept called for a circular arena.<br />
<br />
"<span style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-indent: -24px;">a circular array of stout posts driven into the riverbed and protruding a few feet above high water level."</span><br />
<br />
So now I think this becomes: "a row of three stout posts driven into the riverbed and protruding a few feet above high water level." Heavy ropes connect to the single hole in the first row of rafts, and each of the other rafts are joined in turn by other ropes. So there are three columns/strings of rafts tied together in tandem. I don't think at this point that the three columns are tied to each other. For one thing, this means they could drift closer or further apart during the fighting, which could lead to interesting situations.<br />
<br />
2) the missing rafts. Do I find replacements, and fill the gaps? Or are they missing because the arena is a bit run down? Maybe they are arranged differently on different days? I am kinda liking that idea. Maybe the middle column has a gap on purpose - with a very long stretch of rope? Or maybe it should be moved more to the right (ie. upstream) with a wide-ish gap bridged by a board?<br />
<br />
To make things clear "upstream" in the array of rafts is to the right. The river flows right to left. The nearest bank is off the bottom of the picture. The three rafts adjacent to the ruler represent one of the so-called columns of rafts that have been roped together. The three stout posts would be at the head of each column to the right of the picture. North would be diagonally up and to the top right corner. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The village contains more clan houses than just those belonging to the Golden Sunburst; there would be subsidiary clans, hereditary vassal clans, perhaps a bodyguard clan, or a boating clan, and similar. Looking at the painting, I would declare that the large white buildings were Golden Sunburst clan houses. The other large buildings are those of subsidiary, or vassal clans closely tied to their senior clan. The lesser buildings are perhaps still other clans who are not tied to the Clan of the Golden Sunburst but whose clan business requires their presence. And of course there are workshops, storage buildings and the like as well. The buildings near the fields are not clan houses of course but are workshops or storage areas, or are intended to provide shelter to "Field Watchers" in the outlying areas.</div>
